The Mitchell High School track team will be well-represented this coming Friday at the 2018 State 1A Championship meet after blistering performances from teams and individuals at this past Saturday’s regional competition in Cherokee.
Senior Brody Smith qualified for state competition in two individual events again this year, the 200- and 400-meter dash. Smith is the defending state 400-meter dash state champion.
Smith won the 400 meters at regional with a time of 50.96, nearly two seconds faster than Bessemer City’s Jay Sadler at 52.74. Smith also came in ahead of Lincoln Charter’s Kenny Schild in the 200 meters with a time of 23.29.
“I’m excited about it,” Smith said. “There is going to be great competition, and the atmosphere will be great. I look forward to competing at the top level for the second year in a row. I’m ready physically, but need to prepare myself mentally through the week.”
Senior Eden Phillips will return to state competition this year as well after easily winning the girls’ 400-meter dash – the same event she qualified for in 2017. Phillips’ time of 1:00.99 was nearly two seconds faster than Polk’s Izzy Jackson who came in second.
Sophomore Tyler McKinney’s fourth-place finish in the high jump with a jump of 5-08.00 earned him a spot at state competition as well to round out Mitchell’s individual qualifiers.
The girls’ 400x400 and 4x200-meter relay teams of sophomore Hannah McMahan, freshman Paige Johnson, senior Emma Duncan and Phillips also punched their ticket to state. The team finished fourth in the 4x200 with a time of 1:51.55 and third in the 4x400 with a time of 4:19.93.
The boys’ 4x200-meter relay team of junior Ethan LaPlante, senior Jesse Pitman, junior Landon Miller and Smith also make a return trip to state competition after finishing fourth with a time of 1:36.18.
Alternate for the girls’ relay team is sophomore Adeline Phillips and boys’ team alternate is junior Sawyer Blevins.
State finals competition begins at 1 p.m. Friday, May 18, at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro.
