Softball gets second win of season
BAKERSVILLE —Mitchell’s softball team got a much-needed win last week before losing a close game.
The Lady Mountaineers earned their second win of the season, beating Hendersonville 19-1 April 19. The team lost to Cloudland High School this past Thursday 8-6. Mitchell’s record stood at 2-11 after the loss.
Against Hendersonville, Mitchell scored twice in the first inning before opening things up with seven runs in the second, six in the third and four more in the fourth. Hendersonville got one run in the fifth.
Freshman Gracey Young had four RBIs on three hits for Mitchell. Shelby Twiddy added three RBIs and Callie Blevins, Kylie Hamilton and Carly Suiter each added two. Dana Porter, Kaitlyn Sparks and Annie Buchanan had one RBI each.
Mitchell had 15 hits in the game.
Buchanan pitched three innings with four strikeouts. Sparks pitched the final two innings before the mercy rule took effect.
Against Cloudland on the road, Mitchell wasn’t able to the close the gap after a four-run fourth for Cloudland put Mitchell down 7-3. Mitchell got two runs in the fifth and another in the seventh but couldn’t compete the rally.
Twiddy had four RBIs while Buchanan and Blevins both had one.
Buchanan went six innings on the mound, giving up three earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and four walks.
Mitchell hosts Cloudland on Thursday and Madison on Friday in Ledger.
