Smith, Phillips qualify for regionals
The Mitchell High School track team continued its season this past week with meets at Owen and Hendersonville.
At the Falcon Invitational Tuesday, March 27, in Hendersonville, defending state 400-meter dash champion senior Brody Smith finished first in the event finals with a time of 53.44. Senior Eden Phillips finished third with a time 1:03.24 in the 400-meter girls’ competition.
The girls’ 4x200 and 4x400-meter relay teams finished fourth while the boys’ 4x200-meter relay team finished third.
At the Owen High meet March 22 in Black Mountain, Smith again won the boys’ 400-meters with a time of 54.04 and the girls’ 4x400-meter relay team also finished in first place with a time of 5:12.10. The girls’ 4x200-meter relay team finished second as did Hannah McMahan in the girls’ 100-meter dash with a time of 14.14.
The boys’ 4x100-meter, 4x200-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams also finished in the top five, earning third, fourth and second place, respectively.
Smith has qualified for regionals in the 200 and 400-meter dash. The girls’ 4x400-meter relay team, comprised of McMahan, Paige Johnson, Emma Duncan and Phillips, has also qualified for regionals as has Phillips in the 400-meter dash.
The track team competed Thursday, March 29, at Mountain Heritage. Results of that meet were not available at press time. The team returns to action Wednesday, April 11, with a meet at Avery.
