Mitchell senior and defending state 400-meter dash champion Brody Smith was named “Most Outstanding Runner” in the Western Highlands Conference.

Runners prepare for regionals

The Mitchell High School track team competed this past week in the Western Highlands Conference Championships at Polk and earned several first-place finishes. 

Senior Eden Phillips won the girls’ 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.26. Phillips will compete at the regional competition at Cherokee this coming Saturday in the 400 meters as well as the 4x200 and 4x400-meter relays with teammates Hannah McMahan, Emma Duncan and Paige Johnson. 

The girls’ 4x200-meter relay team also won first place at the conference championships. 

Senior Brody Smith won first-place in the boys’ 200- and 400-meter dash. Smith, the defending state champion in the 400 meters, will compete at this coming Saturday’s regionals in the 400 meters, 200 meters, 4x200-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay. He was named this year’s Western Highlands Conference “Runner of the Year.”
