Ponder tosses no-hitter as Mitchell wins doubleheader at Avery
LEDGER – Mitchell High School’s varsity baseball team took both games of a doubleheader at Avery Wednesday, April 17, to improve its overall record to 10-6 (8-5 in Western Highlands Conference play).
Junior Zeus Ponder pitched a complete game no-hitter and struck out 16 compared to two walks in game one.
The Mountaineers outscored the Vikings 23-1 in the doubleheader. The pair of wins snapped Mitchell’s four-game losing skid.
Mitchell got off to a quick start in the first game against Avery by taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning and adding runs in each inning. The Mountaineers won 15-0.
Eight players recorded at least one RBI for Mitchell, and senior Caleb Pritchard led the way with a team-high four RBIs. Sophomore Jeremy Sparks and junior Noah Pitman recorded three hits each.
The second game of the doubleheader played out similarly for Mitchell, which took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and cushioned it down the stretch en route to an 8-1 win.
Pritchard pitched all five innings, scattering four hits and allowing an earned run.
The Mountaineers play at Owen Tuesday, April 30 before closing the regular season at home against Owen Wednesday, May 1.
