Mountaineers win on senior night over Avery

LEDGER – The Mitchell High School girls’ soccer team ended its season Wednesday, May 1, with a 7-0 loss to visiting Owen. The defeat came a day after the Mountaineers won 4-3 over visiting Avery on senior night.

Mitchell (3-13, 3-7) was led by sophomore Marley Cloer in the win over the Vikings. Cloer scored three of team’s four goals. Senior Courtney Burleson also scored a goal in the win.

Sophomore goalie Paige Johnson played the entire game in front of the net and recorded 20 saves against Avery. 

All three of Mitchell’s wins this season were over Western Highlands Conference foes. The Mountaineers twice defeated Mountain Heritage – 6-1 on April 1 and 8-1 on April 17 – in addition to the May 1 win over Avery. Mitchell lost April 10 to the Vikings 1-0 in overtime.
