Mountaineers win big at Happy Valley
ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. – The Mitchell Middle Mountaineers used a strong running game to get off to a solid start this season after traveling to Elizabethton, Tennessee, on Thursday, Aug. 16, and coming away with a decisive 50-8 victory over the Happy Valley Herons.
The Mountaineers amassed 413 yards of offense in the win and were led by running back Gage Young, who rushed for 146 yards and scored two touchdowns on six carries.
Quarterback Ty Turbyfill added 77 yards rushing and also scored a pair of touchdowns on four carries to go along with completing 2-of-6 passes for 54 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown pass to tight end Joe Conley.
Running back Enrique Huaroco rushed three times for 64 yards and scored a touchdown and running back Rylan Cooper also had a rushing touchdown in the win.
As productive as the Mitchell offense was, the defense was equally as efficient, allowing the Herons 89 yards only on offense. Huaroco recorded eight tackles and four for a loss to lead the defense. Followed by Chandler Horney, Nate Stamey and Dawson Forbes, who had seven, six and five tackles, respectively. Stamey also had an interception for the Mountaineers.
The Middle School Mountaineers host Watauga at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, at Mitchell High School.
