Mountaineers earn All-WHC honors

Ponder named conference 'Pitcher of the Year'

LEDGER – Mitchell High School’s varsity baseball team earned some extra attention following its 11-8 season as junior pitcher Zeus Ponder was tabbed Western Highlands Conference Pitcher of the Year and senior Cole Gillespie and juniors Noah Pitman and Logan Beaver were named to the all-Western Highlands Conference team.

Ponder emerged this past season as Mitchell’s top pitcher. The right-hander went 5-1 with a team-best 2.45 ERA.

Ponder’s five wins include a no-hitter. His 71 strikeouts led the team and he allowed just 34 hits across 40 innings. 

Gillespie, Pitman and Beaver were steady offensive contributors for the Mountaineers. 

Gillespie led the team with a .400 batting average and drove in 13 runs. 

Pitman hit .380 with 16 RBIs and Beaver compiled a .341 average. 

Gillespie, Pitman and Beaver combined for 29 stolen bases, including Pitman’s team-high 20.

Mitchell’s three all-conference selections were the third-most in the conference behind Polk and Madison, which had six each. 

Avery, Mountain Heritage and Owen each had a pair of selections.
