Mountaineer golfers finish 10th in state
PINEHURST – Mitchell High School’s golf team finished 10th overall at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 1A State Championship with a two-round team score of 762. It was the team’s second straight trip to state championships.
The Mountaineers finished 18 strokes ahead of 11th-place Princeton and 26 strokes in front of 12th-place Highlands. Community School of Davidson won the championship with a 661.
Senior Austin McGuire posted Mitchell’s best individual score by shooting an 89 in round one and a 93 in round two. McGuire’s individual score of 182 tied him for 38th in the field of individuals.
Hudson Renfro opened the competition by shooting a 99 in the first round but rebounded with an 89 in the second round, which tied him for 46th among individuals.
Junior Tucker Garland finished with a two-round score of 194 and sophomore Ty Pitman shot a 201 over the course of both rounds.
