MITCHELL TRACK: Mitchell shines at Mountain Heritage meets
BURNSVILLE – The Mitchell High School track team earned four first-place finishes Thursday, April 12, at the Mountain Heritage Open 2 in Burnsville.
The girls’ 4x200 and 4x400-meter relay team of Emma Duncan, Eden Phillips, Hannah McMahan and Paige Johnson finished first with a time of 1:54.60 in the 4x200 and finished first in the 4x400 with a time 4:27.90. The 4x400 team has qualified for regionals.
Defending state 400-meter dash champion Brody Smith won the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.74 and Kade Hoilman finished on top in the boys’ 110-meter hurdles.
At the first Mountain Heritage Open on March 29, the Mountaineers had nine first-place finishes, including Phillips in the girls’ 100-meter dash, who was followed by teammate Hannah McMahan in second place. Johnson, Duncan and Adeline Phillips finished second, third and fourth, respectively, in the girls’ 200-meter dash. The 4x100 and 4x200-meter girls’ relay teams finished first as did Brody Smith in the 200-meter dash.
Troy Hoilman grabbed a pair of first-place finishes at the meet with times of 21.14 in the boys’ 110-meter hurdles and 51.14 in the 300-meter hurdles.
The boys’ 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relay teams finished in first place as did Jesse Pitman in the boys’ long jump.
The track team competes three times this coming week beginning Thursday, April 19, at Ashe County then Saturday, April 21, in the Blue Ridge Classic at A.C. Reynolds and Monday, April 23, in the Leesa Anderson Invitational at Brevard.
