Mitchell snaps 36-game losing streak
SPRUCE PINE – The Mitchell High School boys’ soccer team snapped a 36-game, two-year losing streak Tuesday, Aug. 29, with a 4-2 win over visiting Swain County at Harris Middle School.
It was the team’s first win since defeating Cherokee 9-1 on Aug. 24, 2015.
“It’s been a while,” said Ed Duncan, Mitchell boys’ soccer head coach. “We have only three guys on the roster who were on the team the last time we won a match. We are all very glad to see hard work pay off. I’ve been preaching about hard work and it’s easier to believe it has its benefits when we see these results.”
Mitchell (1-5) has scored 13 goals this season, which is something Duncan said is a positive sign.
“We are scoring regularly and playing better defense,” Duncan said. “We are overall just playing better soccer and are just now getting to full strength with school starting back. Our guys are playing their positions better and working better with the guys around them. Swain County is not a bad program. We know we are moving in the right direction.”
Senior Juan Campos leads the team with six goals this season, including three in the win against Swain County. Junior Aaron Martinez has scored four and sophomore Shane Green has scored three.
Mitchell lost 8-1 at Brevard Aug. 30 and returns to action at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, against McDowell at the Harris Middle School field.
