Mitchell JV wins conference title

Defense did not allow a touchdown in past 3 games

LEDGER – Mitchell High School’s junior varsity football team earned the Western Highlands Conference title this past Thursday with a 35-0 win over visiting Charles D. Owen.

Mitchell closes the regular season 9-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play. The team posted three-straight shutouts to close the season and outscored those opponents 113-0.

Mitchell’s lone loss came in a 10-8 setback at Elizabethton in Week 2. First-year head coach Isaac Edwards said the early road loss may have been just what his team needed.

“Those losses early will either make or break you,” he said. “From that point on, we’ve had some pretty dominating wins. We’ve really been growing into our identity as a team.”

The Mountaineers started fast against Owen with a 27-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Troy Hoilman to Garrison Phillips in the first quarter. After a failed 2-point conversion, Mitchell led 6-0.

The Mountaineers struck again in the second quarter when Hoilman and Phillips connected again for a touchdown. The team converted the 2-point conversion and took a 14-0 lead into halftime.

Hoilman scored on a 22-yard scamper in the third quarter and with a successful 2-point conversion, Mitchell led 22-0 at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

Freshmen Tanner Duncan and Grant Phillips added a rushing touchdown each in the final quarter to make the final score 35-0.

The Mountaineers racked up 406 yards of offense. Hoilman completed 3-of-8 passes for 41 yards and ran eight times for 93 yards and a score.

Duncan was the team’s leading rusher with 125 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.

Logan Hudgins and Kade Hoilman anchored Mitchell’s defense with seven tackles each. Sophomore Hunter Zheng recorded a tackle for a loss and a sack and Duncan recovered a pair of fumbles.

“Our staff has had a good plan,” Edwards said about his defense. “Guys bought into our defense early.”
