Mitchell has won 3 of past 4 games
LEDGER – The Mitchell High School baseball team has won three of its past four games and has made its way to second place in the Western Highlands Conference.
The Mountaineers, who are 9-6 overall and 8-5 in conference play, lost 12-6 to visiting Polk this past Wednesday but got back on track by throttling visiting Avery 16-3 this past Friday.
Mitchell trailed Polk 12-2 entering the bottom of the seventh. The team rallied to plate four runs but junior pitcher Kyler Scruggs struck out a pair of Mountaineers to cut the rally short.
The Mitchell offense got started immediately against Avery. The team jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one inning and added a pair of runs in the second, three in the third and seven in the fourth.
Avery scored three runs in the top of the fifth but it wasn’t enough to avoid an early end due to the run rule.
Junior Jason Burleson led the way for Mitchell with three RBIs in the rout of the Vikings. Braeden Keller, Cole Gillespie and Noah Pitman all added two RBIs each.
Keller and senior Ben Young combined to pitch five innings of one-hit ball with three earned runs and five strikeouts.
The Mountaineers close the regular season Friday with a trip to Owen (4-10).
Mitchell has a half-game lead over third place Mountain Heritage (7-6, 7-5) and sits behind conference frontrunner Polk (16-2, 12-0).
