Mitchell gets first WHC win, loses to Patton

Mitchell baseball got its first conference win of the season this past week before falling in nonconference action.

Mitchell lost to Patton 16-6 in Ledger April 13, two days after beating Polk 18-10 in extra innings for the Mountaineers first Western Highlands Conference victory.

Justin Greene’s two-run home run put Mitchell ahead 2-1 on Patton after one inning. It was Greene’s fourth long ball of the season. But Patton tied the game with one run in the second and put up four runs in the third as errant pitching and sloppy defense hampered Mitchell.

Patton scored three runs in the fourth and fifth innings and tacked on two each in the sixth and seventh to run away with the game. Mitchell got a run in the fourth, another one in fifth and two in the sixth.

The loss put Mitchell at 2-7 overall with nine games remaining.

Mitchell scored eight runs in the 10th inning to beat Polk 18-10 April 11 in Columbus for its first conference win. Polk scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

It was 4-3 Polk after one inning and stayed that way until the fifth when both teams scored twice. Mitchell got two runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to go up three before Polk stormed back. Neither team scored in the eight and both teams got a run in the ninth.

Trystan Jenkins had five RBIs off three hits and scored three runs. Luke Tipton had four RBIs, two runs and two hits. Chance Cook added three RBIs and a run. Greene, Jason Burleson and Dustin Suiter each had two runs and an RBI. Ben Young scored four runs.

Jenkins allowed three earned runs in six innings pitched with nine strikeouts and two walks. Greene allowed one run and had two strikeouts in three innings. Suiter gave up a run and had a strikeout in one inning of work.

Mitchell was 1-4 in WHC play after the win. Madison tops the league at 6-1 while Mountain Heritage is 7-2 and Owen is 6-2. Mitchell is behind Hendersonville (3-6) and ahead of Avery (0-8).

Mitchell played Tuesday at Hendersonville. Results weren’t available at press time.

A makeup game against Madison is scheduled for Thursday in Ledger.
