LEDGER – The Mitchell High School football team made quick work of visiting Avery this past Friday in a 56-0 win.

The Mountaineers (9-1, 3-1 Western Highlands Conference) had a 49-0 lead before halftime and had little trouble scoring on offense and defense throughout the game.

Mitchell scored first less than 30 seconds into the game when senior quarterback Ben Young hit senior wide receiver Brody Smith for a 43-yard touchdown. Young finished the game 6-of-10 passing with 125 yards and two touchdowns while Smith led all receivers with 79 yards and two touchdowns on only two receptions.

Mitchell scored two more times in the first quarter by way of a 6-yard run by Young and a 5-yard run by senior Preston Roe.

The Mountaineers added four more scores in the second quarter. After Young hit Smith for another score, sophomore lineman Matthew Gilbert scooped up an Avery fumble forced by senior Ben Robinson and ran it in for a touchdown to put Mitchell ahead 35-0. A few minutes later, Smith intercepted a Van McCollum pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown. A 7-yard run by sophomore Noah Pitman rounded out Mitchell’s first-half scoring and the Mountaineers took a 49-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Freshman Ty Sparks scored Mitchell’s final touchdown of the night on a 44-yard run with 7:47 remaining in the game.

Pitman led all rushers with 72 yards and a touchdown on six carries.

Robinson had seven tackles from his linebacker position to lead the Mountaineer defense, including a quarterback sack and 2.5 tackles for a loss.

Avery (2-8, 0-4 WHC) mustered only 116 yards of offense in the game.

Mitchell travels to Swannanoa this coming Friday to play Owen (1-8, 1-3) to finish regular-season play.
