Mitchell basketball teams heating up
LEDGER – The Mitchell High School girls’ basketball team is heating up.
The Mountaineers have won three of their past four games and outscored their last two opponents, Hibriten and Owen, by a combined 141-66.
After a 67-59 loss at Avery Tuesday, Jan. 15, the Mountaineers (11-7, 2-3) started a stretch of three-straight home games with contests against Hibriten and Owen.
Led by double-digit scoring efforts from sophomore Marley Cloer (16 points), junior Hannah McMahan (12) and sophomore Jill Pittman (10) the Mountaineers routed Hibriten 72-32.
The Mountaineers led 19-12 after the opening quarter and never trailed down the stretch. The Mitchell defense stifled Hibriten, holding the visitors to just 10 second-half points.
Mitchell 68, Owen 34
Sophomore Paige Johnson ignited the Mountaineers in their 68-34 home win over Owen with a team-high 17 points. McMahan chipped in 13 points and Cloer added 10 points.
Mitchell led Owen 31-13 at halftime and outscored the visitors 22-11 in the third quarter, prompting the Mountaineers to utilize a slew of bench players down the stretch.
Mitchell hosted rival Mountain Heritage this past Tuesday. Results were not available at press time.
The Mountaineers have games at Madison and Owen and home contests against Polk County and Avery County left on the regular season schedule.
LEDGER – Mitchell High School’s boys’ basketball team has won three of its past four games and used a balanced scoring effort this past week to rout visiting Owen.
The Mountaineers (7-10, 3-2) started January on a four-game losing skid but responded with back-to-back road wins over Polk County and Avery.
After the Avery win, Mitchell fell 62-48 at home to Hibriten. Junior Tyler McKinney led the team with 19 points in the loss and junior Mitchell McMahan added 14.
In the team’s 72-47 home win over Owen, McMahan led all scorers with 18 points and junior Jess Ledford (17 points) and sophomore Caius Peterson (10) also helped power the offense.
McKinney and junior Noah Pitman chipped in eight points each and junior Zeus Ponder and senior Caleb Pritchard combined for 11 points.
The Mountaineers hosted Mountain Heritage this past Tuesday. Results were not available at press time.
Mitchell has four regular-season games remaining – at Madison, versus Polk County and Avery, and at Owen.
