Mitchell 14, East Yancey 6
The Middle School Mountaineers traveled to Burnsville Tuesday, Sept. 5, and improved to 2-1 this season with a 14-6 win over East Yancey.
With a steady rain falling throughout the game, the Mountaineers relied heavily on their running game in the win.
Quarterback Carter Hoyle had 146 yards rushing on 15 attempts, including a 55-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion. Running back Ashton McCandless amassed 77 yards rushing on seven attempts for an average of 10 yards per carry. McCandless had a touchdown run of 33 yards and had 48 yards receiving.
East Yancey scored with 22 seconds remaining in the game.
Isaac Biddix led the Mitchell defense with seven tackles, five of which were for a loss. Xander Gardner had six tackles (two for a loss) and Tyler Buchanan had six tackles (one for a loss) and a fumble recovery. Pierce Greene had five tackles and fumble recovery for Mitchell and Ty Turbyfill also recovered a fumble.
The Middle School Mountaineers hosted Avery at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12. Results of that game were not available at press time. The team travels to Cane River Tuesday, Sept. 19. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
