Middle School whips Watauga
LEDGER – Watauga scored on its opening drive of the game Wednesday, Aug. 22, against Mitchell but did not score again as the Mountaineers won their home opener 16-8 over the Wolverines in Ledger.
Mitchell (2-0) was down 8-0 before scoring on its opening possession on a 17-yard touchdown run by quarterback Ty Turbyfill, who also ran in for the two-point conversion.
The Wolverines’ next possession was cut short when Mitchell defensive back Chase Duncan nabbed an interception at the 2-yard line. The Mountaineers took over and put together an 84-yard scoring drive capped off by a 1-yard touchdown run by Turbyfill. A successful two-point conversion put Mitchell up 16-8 at halftime.
Neither team scored in the second half.
Mitchell gained 232 yards of offense on 26 plays in the game, led by Turbyfill who had 126 yards on 14 carries and a pair of touchdowns. Gage Young added 55 yards on five carries and Enrique Huaroco racked up 42 yards on two carries for the Mountaineers.
Turbyfill also led Mitchell on defense with six tackles (two for a loss), while M.J. Ledford and Nate Stamey each had five tackles.
The Middle School Mountaineers have a bye week coming up before traveling to play Table Rock at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept 6.
