MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Mountaineers improve to 5-1
LEDGER – The Mitchell Middle School Mountaineers football team improved to 5-1 this past Tuesday with a 22-0 win in its home finale against Hampton.
After forcing a 3-and-out on defense, the Mountaineers took a quick 8-0 lead after Dalton McMahan returned a punt 57 yards for a touchdown and quarterback Carter Hoyle connected with Pierce Greene for the 2-point conversion.
The Mountaineers added to their lead on their second possession when Hoyle found Gabe Brandt open for a 19-yard touchdown. Hoyle and Brandt also connected for the 2-point conversion to push Mitchell’s lead to 16-0.
The Mountaineers led 16-0 at halftime and after a sluggish third quarter added their final touchdown on a 12-yard scamper by Greene in the final quarter.
Justin Buchanan paced the Mitchell defense with six tackles, including two for a loss. Gage Young added seven tackles.
Hoyle completed 6-of-11 passes for 94 yards and a touchdown and flashed his coverage ability by intercepting a Hampton pass.
Brandt notched two catches for 22 yards and a touchdown.
Mitchell travels to East McDowell Tuesday before closing the season at Avery.
Kickoff at East McDowell is set for 4 p.m. and the game against Avery will begin at 6:30 p.m.
