MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Mitchell crushes Cane River, 46-14
BURNSVILLE – The Mitchell Middle School Mountaineers traveled to Burnsville Tuesday, Sept. 24, and cruised to a 46-14 win over Toe River Conference foe Cane River.
The Mountaineers gained control of the game early and thwarted Cane River’s first drive with an interception by Kaden Phillips. Mitchell’s offense then got rolling and never stopped, led by quarterback Chase Duncan, who rushed for two touchdowns and was 2-for-2 passing for 76 yards. Duncan completed a 55-yard pass to Phillips and a 21-yard touchdown strike to tight end Caleb Cook. Edwin Steele racked up 27 rushing yards on two carries.
Mitchell running back Cole Young rushed for three touchdowns and running back Rylan Cooper added five two-point conversions to round out the scoring for the Mountaineers.
Luke Yelton led the Mountaineer defense, recording four tackles (two for a loss). M.J. Ledford also had four tackles (one for a loss), and Duncan, Cooper and Sage Biddix had three tackles each. Cook and Steele chipped in on defense with one tackle each.
The Mitchell Middle School team plays next at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, at East Yancey.
