McKinney, Pitman make list of top returning players
LEDGER – Two members of this year’s Mitchell High School football team are among Class 1A’s top returning players on offense.
Prep sports website highschoolot.com broke down the statistics of returning receivers and runners in each of North Carolina’s four classifications.
Senior receiver Tyler McKinney was among the top returning receivers, and senior quarterback Noah Pitman made the list of rushers.
McKinney came in at No. 2 on the list of the top-10 returning receivers behind Union Academy’s Derek Young Jr. McKinney averaged 69 yards per game and 24.2 yards per reception this past season, gaining 897 yards and scoring 12 touchdowns with just 37 catches in Mitchell’s traditionally run-oriented offense.
McKinney averaged one touchdown for every three receptions.
Pitman ranked at No. 9 on the website’s list of top returning rushers in Class 1A, gaining 1,347 yards and scoring 10 touchdowns on 172 carries from his quarterback position.
Pitman averaged 103.6 yards game and 7.5 yards per carry on the ground.
The Mountaineers begin the 2019 season at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, at Erwin.
