McDowell edges Mountaineers
LEDGER – The annual Quartz Corp. Holiday Duals took place Saturday, Dec. 16, at Mitchell High School with McDowell edging host Mitchell to claim the team title.
The Mountaineers cruised to easy wins over Cherokee and Hickory in the opening wins and then downed Tuscola to advance to the championship pool.
Mitchell defeated Dobyns-Bennett 51-28 in the semifinal round, powered by important pins from Israel Maltba, Ryan Richardson and Dylan Lowery.
Mitchell fell behind early against the Titans, who shot out to an 18-0 lead on the strength of three-consecutive pins, but the Mountaineers battled back and briefly took the lead at 25-24 before the Titans took three of the final four matches to pull out the 39-30 win.
Richardson and Hudson Boone both finished the day undefeated for the Mountaineers and were named as part of the All-Tournament Team.
The Mountaineers continued action Tuesday with a dual meet at Watauga. Results of that match were not available at press time. Mitchell travels to Asheville Friday to participate in the Smoky Mountain Grapple.
The Mountaineers are 11-3 heading into the holiday break and resume post-holiday competition at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, in their conference opener against Madison in Ledger.
