Ledford speaks to Kiwanis
Katherine Ledford, of Bakersville, is the daughter of Ted and Eleanor Ledford and wife of Brian McKinney. She earned a Ph.D. in American Literature from the University of Kentucky and is an Associate Professor of Appalachian Studies at Appalachian State where she has taught for 10 years.
Ledford made presentations at two meetings of the Kiwanis Club of Spruce Pine, the first was “An Introduction to the Field of Appalachian Studies.”
The Appalachian Mountains range from northern Alabama and continue north through Canada and then resurface in Scotland. Her presentation included the geography, politics, economics and culture of the mountains. Included in her presentation were many books she referenced for those interested in further inquiries.
Ledford’s second presentation centered on two “exchange” trips to Europe she made to compare various aspects of the Carpathian Mountains of the Ukraine and Romania with the Appalachian Mountains. These mountains are of about the same in elevation but are farther north, which results in less deciduous trees and more evergreens. She found that agricultural practices there were like those in our region in the 1940s and 1950s.
Both of Ledford’s presentations were well-received by the members who look forward to another presentation, not yet scheduled, which will concentrate on the language of the Appalachians.
