Lady Mountaineers win 3 of past 5 games

LEDGER – The Mitchell High School Lady Mountaineers are 3-2 in their past five games and Tuesday, Jan. 8, begin a stretch of six games over eight days.

The Lady Mountaineers advanced to the title game of the North Henderson Christmas Tournament after a Thursday, Dec. 27, 55-53 overtime win against Travelers Rest, South Carolina, and a 38-26 victory Friday, Dec. 28, over tournament host North Henderson. Mitchell lost to Mountain Heritage 66-53 in the championship game. 

The Lady Mountaineers (8-4, 0-1) returned to action at Mountain Heritage (9-0, 1-0) Friday, Jan. 4, and again fell short, losing 68-53 to the Cougars and marking the second-straight loss to their rivals.

Sophomore Paige Johnson was 8-for-14 from the field including 3-for-8 from three-point range on her way to scoring a game-high 22 points against the Cougars. Sophomore Marley Cloer scored 10 points for the Lady Mountaineers and was 3-for-7 from three-point range.

Mitchell got back on the winning track Saturday, Jan. 5, with a convincing 50-29 win in Lenoir over Hibriten. 

Junior guard Hannah McMahan led Mitchell in the win with 12 points and was 8-for-11 from the free-throw line.

McMahan leads the team in scoring average with 12.2 points per game this season. Johnson is also averaging double figures with 11.1 points per game.

The Lady Mountaineers began a slate of games Tuesday, Jan. 8, with a home Western Highlands Conference game against Madison. The team travels to McDowell Wednesday, Jan. 9, to Polk County Friday, Jan. 11, to Johnson County, Tennessee, Saturday, Jan. 12, and to Avery Tuesday, Jan. 15. Mitchell will host Hibriten Wednesday, Jan. 16.
