Lady Mountaineers split first 2 games of season
Mitchell girls’ soccer got a bounce-back win this past week with a 6-0 win over Cherokee Thursday in Ledger after losing its first game of the 2017 campaign.
After losing its season opener 5-1 to Brevard Feb. 28, Head Coach Meredith Hoilman said Mitchell was “a whole different team” against Cherokee.
The Lady Mountaineers dominated possession in the first half and scored twice before the break. Mitchell added four goals in the second half, including one by Lyndsey Crowder as time expired.
Mitchell had 36 shots and was able to build momentum on offense against Cherokee. Natalia Pineda scored twice for Mitchell while Rindie Carter, Caitlin Duncan and Ada McKinney each scored once.
Hoilman said the win was a confidence booster. Players are beginning to trust each other on the field and more are starting to contribute, she said.
“I feel like they are really learning their positions and what they need to do on the field,” Hoilman said. “Our defense played well in both games.”
Mitchell played in a downpour at Brevard and lost starting goalie Brandey Burleson to a concussion in the first half.
Zoe Cloer scored the lone goal for Mitchell.
Hoilman said Mitchell “did some good things at times” in the loss.
The Lady Mountaineers played Monday against Brevard at home. The team plays at McDowell Wednesday, a home game against Murphy Thursday and this coming Monday travels to Owen.
