LEDGER – Mitchell won big over Trinity Academy in 2017. This year’s game was not as easy, but the Mountaineers still came away with a convincing 44-25 win over the Knights.
Mitchell (2-1) stumbled early and fell behind 9-0 in the first quarter before scoring twice to take a 12-9 lead. The Mountaineers scored 13 unanswered in the second quarter and led 25-9 at halftime. Mitchell added 13 more points in the third quarter and six in the fourth quarter while allowing 16 points to claim the 44-25 win.
Senior Landon Miller led the Mountaineers on both sides of the ball, rushing 13 times for 131 yards and two touchdowns while recording 11 solo and two assisted tackles to lead the defense.
Junior quarterback Noah Pitman was 2-for-7 passing with two touchdowns and added another touchdown on 64 yards rushing.
Junior Tyler McKinney caught both of Noah Pitman’s touchdown passes and finished the game with 81 yards receiving. McKinney garnered 186 all-purpose yards, including a kickoff return of 47 yards, a punt return of 42 yards and had an interception, which he returned for 16 yards.
Miller had a lot of help on defense. Junior Matthew Gilbert racked up 10 tackles, senior Garrett Greene had nine and seniors Hudson Boone and Jordan Cox recorded eight tackles each.
Mitchell plays the second of five-straight home games Friday, Sept. 7, against McDowell. The Mountaineers defeated the Titans (2-1) 49-19 this past season in Marion. McDowell won two-straight games before losing this past week to Patton.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Ledger.
