JV FOOTBALL: Mitchell opens season with 22-8 loss to Erwin
LEDGER – The Mitchell High School junior varsity football team opened its 2019 season Thursday, Aug. 22, with a 22-8 home loss to the Erwin Warriors.
The game was scoreless until the 3:14 mark of the second quarter when Erwin scored on a 4-yard touchdown run. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful, and Erwin had a 6-0 lead at halftime.
Mitchell opened the second half with a scoring drive that culminated with a 17-yard touchdown run by freshman Gage Young. The two-point conversion attempt was successful, and Mitchell took an 8-6 lead with 6:23 remaining in the third quarter.
With an 8-6 lead, the Mountaineers were poised to score again with 5:48 remaining in the game when an Erwin defender scooped up a Mitchell fumble and scampered 91 yards for a touchdown. The two-point conversion was successful, and Erwin took a 14-8 lead.
The Warriors added another touchdown and two-point conversion with 3:38 left in the game to make the final score 22-8.
Young led Mitchell on offense with 150 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries. Freshman quarterback Ty Turbyfill tallied 68 yards on 16 carries and was 4-for-5 passing for 42 yards and an interception.
Sophomore Garrett Bullis caught one pass for 39 yards to lead Mitchell in receiving.
Turbyfill also led Mitchell’s defense with six tackles in the game, followed by Jason Smith, Xander Gardner, Chandler Horney and Nate Stamey with five tackles each.
The JV team returns to action at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, at Elizabethton, Tennessee.
