JV FOOTBALL: Mitchell falls to Heritage
BURNSVILLE – The Mitchell High School junior varsity football team fell to 0-3 on the season this past week after 30-14 loss to Mountain Heritage Thursday, Sept. 5, in Burnsville.
The Cougars scored a touchdown in the first and second quarters while the Mountaineers were unable to reach the end zone in the first half and were down 16-0 at halftime.
Mitchell got on the board in the third quarter on a 35-yard touchdown run by running back Gage Young and managed to hold Mountain Heritage scoreless in the third and trailed 16-6 going into the final frame.
The Cougars scored twice in the fourth quarter to take a 30-6 lead before Young scampered 10 yards for his second touchdown of the game. The two-point conversion attempt was good in the form of a pass from quarterback Seth Rayfield to receiver Joe Conley to make the final score 30-14.
Young led Mitchell with 87 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries while Jason Smith added 50 yards on eight carries for the Mountaineers.
Mitchell was led on defense by Smith’s eight tackles. Nate Stamey added seven tackles and Xander Gardner, Chandler Horney and Enrique Huaroco had six tackles each.
The junior varsity Mountaineers play at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, against McDowell in Ledger.
