HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING: 5 Mountaineers qualify for individual state championships
NEWLAND – Mitchell Wrestling qualified five wrestlers for the individual state championships this coming weekend in Greensboro and finished 5th overall out of 23 teams at the Regional Individual Championships this past weekend at Avery County High School.
Dylan Lowery (113 pounds) scored a 9-5 decision over Alleghany's Evan Wagoner in the finals of the 1A Western Regional Wrestling Championships to earn Mitchell's lone regional title.
Coltin Marlowe (126 pounds) and Hudson Boone (285 pounds) earned a trip to the state championships as regional runners-up. Marlowe returns to the state championships after a narrow 2-0 decision victory over Avery’s River Griffith and Boone fell to Starmount senior Antonio Lopez.
Ryan Richardson (160 pounds) and Israel Maltba (132 pounds) earned third-place finishes with pinfall victories in the consolation finals to earn their way to the state championships. Richardson also competed in the state championships in 2017.
The 1A Championships begin Friday with the finals set for Saturday afternoon. Mitchell qualified four wrestlers in 2017.
Mitchell had 13 wrestlers out of 14 weight classes qualify for the Individual Regional Competition and 11 continued to day two of competition on Saturday.
