Golf team opens 2019 season 2-0
TRYON – The Mitchell High School golf team began its quest to return to the state championships Thursday, March 21, with a win at Polk County.
The Mountaineers shot a 358 as a team, finishing seven strokes ahead of second-place Avery and were led by senior Austin McGuire’s team-low score of 84. Two other Mountaineers, sophomores Ty Pitman and Tucker Garland shot 89 and 87, respectively.
The Mountaineers hosted a match Thursday, March 28, at Grassy Creek Golf and Country Club in Spruce Pine and again finished in first place with a team score of 334. Avery finished in second place with a 371, followed by Polk with a 397 and Mountain Heritage with a 431.
McGuire again shot a team-low 77 in the win. Pitman shot an 85 while Garland and junior Mitchell McMahan each shot an 86.
The Mountaineers have another home-course match at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 4, against non-conference opponent Thomas Jefferson at Grassy Creek Golf and Country Club.
