Golf team finishes 11th at state
The Mitchell High School golf team finished 11th at this past week’s 1A state golf competition at Foxfire Resort and Golf Club in Jackson Springs.
The team shot a 786 over the two-day tournament, finishing three shots ahead of last place Southside.
“We are young and inexperienced and there were a lot of nerves involved,” said Mitchell Warren, Mitchell head golf coach. “None of those guys had ever been in that kind of atmosphere and it was definitely a good learning experience.”
Warren said he “felt good” after the practice round.
“We relaxed and played better the second day,” Warren said. “Yardage was a big issue. We were used to playing between 5,700-6,000 yards and regional and state were around 6,700 yards. That’s a really big difference when you’re used to playing much shorter courses.”
The good news, Warren said, is the team’s youth. Austin McGuire is the lone junior, Mitchell McMahan and Hudson Renfro are sophomores and Ty Pitman and Ty Sparks are freshmen.
“We plan on being back at state for sure,” Warren said. “This year should’ve taken care of the butterflies at regional and state. We just need to go out there and play. That’s the only way to get better. We got everyone coming back. I’m pleased with our year, I really wasn’t expecting us to play as well as we did this year”
