GIRLS’ BASKETBALL: Mitchell wins 2 straight to end regular season play
LEDGER – The Mitchell Lady Mountaineers basketball team has reeled off a pair of wins heading into Western Highlands Conference Tournament play after a 77-48 rout of the Polk Lady Wolverines Friday, Feb. 8, in Ledger.
Mitchell had four players score in double figures against Polk, led by a 16-point effort from sophomore Marley Cloer. Junior Hannah McMahan scored 14 on 4-of-7 shooting and sophomores Jill Pittman and Paige Johnson scored 13 points each in the win.
The Lady Mountaineers rode double-digit scoring efforts from Cloer and Johnson to victory on Tuesday, Feb. 5, to a 61-35 blowout road win over the Owen Warhorses in Black Mountain.
Cloer tallied a team-high 17 points and was 4-of-6 from three-point range in the game. Johnson scored 15 points and made 3-of-4 three-point attempts.
The Lady Mountaineers built an 18-9 lead after the first quarter and outscored the Warhorses 13-7 in the second frame to take a 31-16 lead at halftime. The second half was more of the same as Mitchell continued the onslaught to cruise to the 26-point win.
The Lady Mountaineers (14-9, 5-5) begin Western Highlands Conference tournament competition Friday, Feb. 15, in Ledger against Polk.
