Cougars top Mitchell
BURNSVILLE – The Mitchell High School Mountaineers football team attempts to regroup after its first loss this coming Friday when the Madison Patriots make the trip to Ledger.
Mitchell (6-1, 0-1) lost 30-20 to rival Mountain Heritage this past Friday in its Western Highlands Conference opener and Madison (3-4, 1-0) is coming off a 52-34 win over Avery County. Mitchell defeated the Patriots 35-21 on the road this past season.
The Mountaineers will use their potent rushing game to control the clock and the line of scrimmage and rely heavily on a stout defense to stop a high-flying Madison offense that averages 310 rushing and 125 passing yards per game.
Under first-year head coach Scott Eubanks, Madison junior quarterback Clark Gray has thrown for 845 yards this season and is also the Patriots’ leading rusher with 995 yards on the ground. Madison senior running back Ty Snelson has rushed for 709 yards this season and averages 188 yards per game.
Mitchell’s running game was stymied this past week against Mountain Heritage, as the team mustered only 113 yards on the ground. Senior quarterback Ben Young had his best game statistically through the air against Heritage, going 15-of-26 passing for 260 yards and two touchdowns.
Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. Friday in Ledger.
