BOYS' BASKETBALL: Mountaineers beat Owen, lose to Polk
LEDGER – The Mitchell Mountaineers boys’ basketball team ended its regular season Friday, Feb. 8, with a 65-59 home loss to the Polk Wolverines.
The loss came three days after the Mountaineers overcame an early deficit Tuesday, Feb. 5, to claim a 69-51 win over the Owen Warhorses in Black Mountain.
Junior Tyler McKinney was 8-for-15 shooting led the Mountaineers with 19 points in the win at Owen.
Sophomore Cauis Peterson went 6-for-8 from the field and was second on the team in scoring with 15 points against the Warhorses.
The Warhorses built an early 18-6 lead after the first quarter, but Mitchell’s defense clamped down in the second quarter as the Mountaineers outscored the Warhorses 17-9 and took a 33-27 lead at halftime.
Owen cut into Mitchell’s lead in the third quarter, but the Mountaineers went on to outscore the Warhorses 19-9 in the final frame to claim the win.
Mitchell (9-13, 5-5) begins Western Highlands Conference Tournament play Friday, Feb. 15, against Polk in Ledger.
