BOYS' BASKETBALL: Mitchell win sets up second-round game vs. Bishop McGuiness
LEDGER – The No. 8-seeded Mitchell High School boys' basketball team advanced to the second round of the NCHSAA Class 1A State Playoffs Tuesday, Feb. 26, with an 80-69 win over River Mill Academy in Ledger.
The win sets up a second-round match Thursday, Feb. 28, in Ledger against No. 9 seed Bishop McGuinness, which defeated No. 24 seed Mount Airy 63-53 in the first round.
Junior Tyler McKinney scored a team-high 22 points in the win. Junior Zeus Ponder added 21 points and sophomore Caius Peterson chipped in 17 points.
After trailing 13-12 after one quarter, Mitchell surged ahead with a 30-point second quarter and took a 42-24 lead into halftime. The Mountaineers did not trail in the second half.
The second round matchup between Mitchell (12-14) and Bishop McGuinness (19-8) will begin at 6 p.m.
