Baseball teams falls in first round of playoffs
ROXBORO – The Mitchell High School varsity baseball team lost 7-4 at Roxboro Community School Tuesday, May 7, in the first round of the 1A state baseball playoffs.
The Mountaineers finish the season 11-8 overall, including a 9-6 mark in Western Highlands Conference play.
Roxboro struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning, but Mitchell quickly answered with three runs in the top of the second.
The Bulldogs used a five-run third inning to take a lead they did not relinquish.
Seniors Cole Gillespie and Caleb Pritchard finished with two hits each. Gillespie recorded the team’s lone RBI.
Pritchard smacked a double, which stood as Michell’s lone extra-base hit.
Junior Zeus Ponder started on the mound for the Mountaineers and pitched five innings, scattering eight hits and allowing six earned runs. He struck out eight and walked five.
Pritchard pitched an inning in relief and allowed one unearned run while striking out one and walking one.
