7 seniors selected for all-star games
LEDGER – Seven Mitchell High School senior basketball players are not hanging up their uniforms just yet.
Lady Mountaineers Eden Phillips, Emma Duncan, Zoe Cloer and Katy Hall and boys’ basketball players Trystan Jenkins and Jesse Pitman were selected to play Saturday, March 17, in the fourth annual West vs. Midwest 1A All-Star Game at Andrews. The games match small school stars from the Southern Piedmont 1A conference and two 1A schools in the Western Highlands 1A/2A conference along with the Smoky Mountain 1A conference.
Senior Lady Mountaineer Morgan Buchanan will play the same day at 6 p.m. in the Blue-White All-Star game at Enka.
“They deserve it,” said Zack McCartha, head coach of the Lady Mountaineers and this year’s West vs. Midwest girls’ head coach. “They are a great group of players and a great group of kids. It will be nice to see them suit up in purple one more time and play together and it’s an honor to coach them in the game. I wish I could be there to cheer on Morgan, but I know she’ll do great just like she did this entire season.”
Buchanan ended the season averaging 12 points and 10 rebounds for the 20-8 Lady Mountaineers.
“I’m pretty nervous about playing with different people,” Buchanan said. “But I feel like it’s going to be a great experience and really fun.”
Duncan averaged 8.1 points per game this season and scored more than 1,000 points in her four years as a Lady Mountaineer.
“It’s an honor, but I don’t think I would be as happy as I am about it if I didn’t get to do it with the girls and coach McCartha,” she said. “The four of us have been very close since middle school and I look at it as one last ride before we go off to college.”
Cloer played in all 28 games for the Lady Mountaineers this season and made 13 3-pointers.
“I am excited to put my jersey back on, play with some of my best friends and be coached by coach McCartha for one more game,” she said.
Hall scored in double-digits in both playoff games this season and shot nearly 80 percent from the free-throw line.
“I am excited to play one last time with Eden, Emma and Zoe,” she said. “This is an awesome experience that I am very thankful for.”
Senior Jesse Pitman averaged eight points and six rebounds for the boys’ team this year after getting a late start to his season because of a deep playoff run by the football team, on which Pitman was a wide receiver and defensive back.
“I feel very honored to be playing along with some of the best talent 1A has to offer,” Pitman said. “I’m excited about the thought of being able to put my jersey on alongside Trystan and coach Dellinger for one more game.”
Mitchell Head Coach Chad Dellinger is an assistant in the West vs. Midwest boys’ game this year.
Jenkins led Mitchell in scoring with 12.8 points per game. He and Eden Phillips could not be reached for comment.
