Steve Earwood

Steve Lamar Earwood, 68, passed away Saturday, July 28, 2018, at his home. He was a son of Helen Wiseman and Junior Earwood. Steve was raised in the Oakley neighborhood of Asheville and spent extensive time in Fairview with his extended family. Steve attended Oakley Elementary and graduated from Reynolds High School. Early in his life, he worked alongside his father at Sayles Bleachery before joining the Merchant Marines and working with chemical tankers in Wilmington. Upon his retirement, he relocated to Avery County to reside on Mullin Hill Road, where his mother’s family were raised near the old cattle market and Stamey’s store.

The Wiseman family are historical bear hunters, and he enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow hunters, hunting with his dogs and fishing. He belonged to the Daniel Boone Bear Club, the club which addresses the needs of people within the community.

Steve had a heart of gold, which led him to do extensive volunteer work including the Fairview, Acme-Delco and Green Valley Fire and Rescue departments.

Steve is survived by his wife, Susan Daniels Earwood; son, Matthew; stepsons, Alan and Stephen Goza; chosen son, Michael Robinson; brother, Robert; sister-in-law, Lynn; niece, Stephanie, the child of his heart; and Mary Jane Wiseman Bailey, whom he considered his sister. Also surviving is his stepmother, Francis Smith Earwood; and several step-siblings, nieces and nephews.  

Funeral services were 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. The Rev. Bill Mitchell officiated. The family received friends from noon-1 p.m. before the services at the funeral home. Burial followed in the Pisgah Cemetery. Pallbearers were Kenny Hughes, Shuford Carpenter, Mike Carpenter, Benny Vance, John Vance and Eddie “Skeet” Bordeaux. Honorary Pallbearers were members of the Daniel Boone Bear Club.
