May R. Buchanan
May R. Buchanan, 92, of U.S. 19E in Spruce Pine, died Monday, May 28, 2018, at Brian Center Health & Rehab in Spruce Pine.
Born July 10, 1925, in Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Ed and Myrtle Davenport Buchanan Young. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the father of her children, Daniel Smith, who passed away in 1973. She later married Ford Buchanan, who was a loving stepfather to her children and they loved him dearly; he also preceded her in death in 2005. She was also preceded in death by her late husband, Mack McMillan.
May was a member of the Grassy Creek Baptist Church and retired after 50 years of service from Spruce Pine Mica Company. She was a wonderful mother and wife. She was an exceptional cook and seamstress. She enjoyed gardening, canning and working in her flowers. She also enjoyed traveling.
Left to cherish her memories are her daughters, Wanda Robinson, and husband, Wayne, of Sparta, Pat Johnson, and husband, Carl, of Marion, and Beverly Freeman, and husband, Joe, of Spruce Pine; her grandson, Eric Honeycutt, who was the light of May’s life and known to Eric as “Nanny” and his wife, Michelle, of Spruce Pine; her sisters, Irene Justice, of Marion, and Carolyn Snyder, of Spruce Pine; and her brother, John Young and wife, Faye, of Hickory.
A funeral service honoring the life of May Buchanan was 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2018, in the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home with the Rev. William Ellis and the Rev. Matt Mills officiating. A time to support the family, share memories and receive friends was 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2018, in the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home. Interment followed in the Grassy Creek Memorial Gardens.
Flowers will be accepted and appreciated or memorial donations may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of the Blue Ridge, 236 Hospital Drive, Spruce Pine, NC 28777.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Hospice and Palliative Care of the Blue Ridge and to the staff of Brian Center Health & Rehab for their lovely care of May.

Peggy Sparks Dennie
Peggy Sparks Dennie, 81, of Newland, passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2018, at The Mitchell House in Spruce Pine.
She was born July 24, 1936, in Mitchell County, a daughter of the late Steve Sparks and Ethel Pittman Sparks.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bobbie Dennie; and four brothers, Steve Sparks Jr., Rex Sparks, Phil Sparks and Hugh Sparks.
Peggy was a member of Pisgah Methodist Church. She enjoyed traveling, reading, spending time with her family and listening to Gospel music.
Peggy leaves behind to cherish her memory a daughter, Kim Hoyes, of Linville Falls; grandson, Cory Hoyes, of Linville Falls; granddaughter, Megan (Ryan) Dean, of Blanchester, Ohio; one sister, Brenda Price, of Shelby; one Brother, Rick (Susan) Sparks, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and two great-grandchildren, Christepher and Jade Dean, of Blanchester, Ohio.
Funeral services for Peggy Dennie were 4 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2018, at Pisgah Methodist Church with the Rev. Ted Henry officiating. The family received friends from 3-4 p.m. Friday at Pisgah Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Pisgah Cemetery.
The family would like to offer a special “thank you” to Kathy Guinn and Barbara Coffey for the wonderful care that they provided Peggy. Also, the family would like to offer a special “thank you” to the staff at The Mitchell House.

Genevieve Buchanan Holder
Genevieve Buchanan Holder, 88, of Bakersville, passed away Thursday, May 24, 2018, in CarePartners in Asheville. She was the daughter of the late Clarence and Ethel Thomas Buchanan and the wife of the late Clifton Holder, who passed away in 1988 after 40 years of marriage. In addition, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Burt, Clavin and Harrold Buchanan; and her four-legged “grandson,” Dean.
Genevieve was a member of Roan Mountain Baptist Church and before her retirement, she was a supervisor for Modern Globe for years.
She is survived by her son, Roger Holder, of Bakersville; brother, Robert Buchanan, and wife, Martha, of Shelby; sisters, Dorothy Trivette, of Spruce Pine, and Velva Franklin, of Marion; and several nieces and nephews.
Genevieve’s family has requested a private memorial service and in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mitchell County Animal Rescue, 2492 US 19E, Spruce Pine, NC 28777.

Doris Young Shelton
Doris Young Shelton, 89, of Bakersville, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2018, at Mission Hospital in Asheville. She was the daughter of the late Kelly and Inez McNeill. Doris was also preceded in death by her husbands, George D. Young and Charles Shelton; her daughter, Barbara Young Christenson; brothers, Scott McNeill and Glen McNeill; sister, Phyliss McNeill Beckner; nephew, Bobby McNeill; and niece Libby.
Doris is survived by her son, Doug Young, and wife, Lila, of Bakersville; grandchildren, Jennifer Young Revels, of Bakersville, and Aaron Young, and wife, Crystal of Bakersville; great-grandchildren, Finley Revels, Waverly Revels, Creed Revels, Owen Young, Craig Young and Miles Young; sister-in-law, Marion McNeill; niece, Susie Carpenter, and husband, Steve; nephews, John Beckner, and wife, Kathy, and Tom Beckner, and wife, Michelle.
Doris Was a longtime member of Bakersville Baptist Church where she was a choir member for many years. She was a 37-year retiree of French Broad Electric. She enjoyed doing ceramics for many years. After retiring, she enjoyed traveling with husband, Charles, and going on Christian tours with friends.
Funeral services were 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2018, in the Bakersville Baptist Church with Pastor Jim Sutton and the Rev. Larry Joe Greene officiating. The family received friends one hour prior to the service. Burial followed in the Green Young Cemetery.

Shirley Suddreth, 81, of McHone Road in Spruce Pine, died Friday, May 25, 2018, at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals in Asheville.
Born April 26, 1937, in Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Hubert and Beatrice Hawkins Willis. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother, Eugene Willis; and her sister, Betty Jo Hoyle.
Shirley was a member of the Berry Chapel Baptist Church and was the manager of the bakery and deli at Ingles. She was a loving wife and mother that loved all her family. She also loved her dogs, Emma and Maxx. She enjoyed camping with her family and grandchildren, gardening and her flowers. She also enjoyed cooking and was a well-known wedding cake baker.
Left to cherish her memories are her husband of 62 years, Kenneth Suddreth, of the home; her son, Kenny Suddreth, of Trade, Tennessee; her daughter, Deborah Dysart, and husband, Frank, of Spruce Pine; her granddaughter, Tanya Morrow, and husband, David, of Columbus; her grandsons, Trenton Suddreth, and wife, Kim, of Spruce Pine, and Trae Suddreth, and wife, Morgan, of Spruce Pine; her great-granddaughters, Keisha Hughes, and husband, John, of Burnsville, and Allison Suddreth, of Spruce Pine; and her great-grandson, Joey Dysart, of Columbus.
A funeral service honoring the life of Shirley Suddreth was 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at Berry Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Williams and the Rev. Greg Hollifield officiating. A time to support the family, share memories and receive friends 1-2 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at the church. Interment followed in the Spruce Pine Memorial Cemetery.

Family and friends are invited to visit and remember Sue Tolley Fox from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, June 16, at Grassy Creek Baptist Church’s fellowship hall. There is no formal service, just a time to be together. Light refreshments will be served. Sue passed away May 9 in Goldsboro after living a full and happy life. She was loved by many and they are invited to come remember her. Memorials can be made to the food pantry at Grassy Creek Baptist Church.
