Eileen McKinney Biggerstaff

Eileen McKinney Biggerstaff, 89, of Boone, passed away Saturday evening, March 31, 2018, at her home.

Eileen is survived by two daughters, Jeannie Caviness and husband, Lawrence, of Boone, and Janice Dunlap and husband, Eddie, of Albermarle; one son, Joe Biggerstaff and wife, Kim, of Hendersonville; eight grandchildren, Seth Caviness and wife, Carrie, Laura Caviness Petche and husband, Michael, Ben Caviness, Daniel Dunlap, Gabriel Dunlap, Nathaniel Dunlap and wife, Joanna, Eric Biggerstaff and Kate Biggerstaff; four great-grandchildren, Hank, Jon, and Lee Caviness, and Adaline Dunlap; one sister, Joyce Beauchamp, of Bakersville; and two brothers, Royce McKinney and wife, Susan, of Houston, Texas, and Ron McKinney and wife, Libby, of Bakersville. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack E. Biggerstaff; one son, Jonny Biggerstaff; one great-grandson, Ty Caviness; and her father and mother, Isom Hayes McKinney and Jean Bowman McKinney.

Graveside services and burial were at 2 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2018, at Hunter Cemetery in Burnsville. A Celebration of Life Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 14, 2018, at Higgins Memorial United Methodist Church in Burnsville.

James ‘Jim’ Byrd

James “Jim” Byrd, 92, of Bakersville, passed away Sunday, March 25, 2018. He was the son of the late Rayburn and Mabel Webb Byrd and the husband of the late Lewelyn Blevins Byrd. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Lois Gouge and Betty Ayers; and brother, Hayes Byrd. Jim was a member of the Red Hill United Methodist Church and a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a farmer and a truck driver for Mason-Dixon Trucking for 28 years.

Survivors include his daughters, Sally Woody and husband, Bruce, and Molly Pore and husband, Tom, all of Bakersville; sons, James A. Byrd and wife, Charlene, and Brown R. Byrd and wife, Carolyn, also of Bakersville; brothers, Bradley and Jack Byrd, both of Bakersville; grandchildren, James, Kandra, Misti, Casey, Kali, T.J. and Lindsey; stepgranddaughter, Michelle; seven great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; and special family friend, Marie Garland.

The family received friends from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2018, at Henline-Hughes Funeral Home. Funeral services followed at 7 p.m. with Gene Lanier and Bob Hensley officiating. Military Honors concluded the service at the funeral home. Burial was 11 a.m. Thursday, March 29, in the Byrd Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Red Hill United Methodist Church or the Byrd Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 423, Bakersville, NC 28705.

Berdie Barnett Pitman

Berdie Barnett Pitman, 84, of Marion, died Sunday, March 25, 2018, at Deer Park Health & Rehab in Nebo. A funeral service celebrating the life of Berdie Pitman was Wednesday, March 28, 2018, in the Chapel of Webb Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Gouge officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery. Webb Funeral Home of Spruce Pine is assisting the Pitman family.
