Janet Bernice Berry, 86, of Spruce Pine, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, June 23, 2019, at the Charles George VA Hospital with her son and daughter by her side.
She was born March 1, 1933, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Emily Flath and Kenneth Walker. In the 1950s she served in the Army as Communications Operator until the birth of her first child. Her family resided in Michigan until her husband J. Frank Berry’s retirement, when they moved to North Carolina. In 2002, he built a home for her in Spruce Pine, which was her residence until her death.
She is survived by her son, Jason, and wife, Stephanie Berry, of Burnsville; her daughter, Deborah Walker, of the Bronx, New York; her grandchildren, Gary, Kelly, Colleen, Chelsea, Matt, Denali and Zen; and eight great-grandchildren. Her beloved husband, J. Frank Berry, and son, Dan O’Neil, pre-deceased her.
Janet had many dear friends both in the Spruce Pine community at-large and especially at DTs Blue Ridge Java, the Mitchell Senior Center and the Bible Baptist Church in Spruce Pine. She went to DTs every day to work her crossword puzzle and drink coffee, played harmonica at her church, and loved to play pool with her friends at the Mitchell Senior Center. She spent her last night before her surgery on June 18 with her entire family playing pool (and beating everyone soundly). She was a brave and spunky woman who spoke her mind and lived a rich and independent life. Friends and family will dearly miss her.
A memorial service is at noon Saturday, June 29, at the Bible Baptist Church with a reception afterward at DTs.
