Fonda Borders Harris
On Oct. 27, 2016, Fonda Borders Harris was suddenly called from her earthly home to be with her family in her heavenly home. She was 64 years old.
Fonda was the daughter of the late Rev. Hugh and Dorothy Smith Borders. She graduated from Harris High School with honors, where she was also quite an athlete, receiving numerous awards, including MVP in basketball. Fonda went on to college at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she also graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Science Degree in nursing.
Upon graduation, she immediately went to work at Spruce Pine Community Hospital. After a short time of nursing care, she took the position of Director of Continuing Education. Here, she spent days and nights training doctors, nurses, paramedics, firefighters, first responders and many others. It was only fitting that they were by her side doing everything in their power to keep her in this world. After several years in education, she became the Director of Human Resources. Here too, she touched many lives because she loved the people who care for others. Fonda retired after 38 years of service, all in Spruce Pine.
To “Nonna”, church played a very important role in her life. She is a member of First Baptist Church of Burnsville, where she has served as Sunday School teacher, on various committees and sang in the choir with a voice as sweet as an angel. She was also a very talented musician.
Surviving relatives is her husband of 43 years, Phillip (Tony) Harris; a daughter, LeeAnn Chastain, and her husband, Rusty, of Cleveland, Tennessee; a son, Michael Harris, and his wife, Tiffany, of Mars Hill; a brother, Ken Borders, and his wife, Pam, of Spruce Pine; a sister, Dianne Borders, of Greensboro; two very special aunts and cousins; and a very special granddaughter, Esther Lynn Chastain.
A memorial service was 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, 2016, at First Baptist Church of Burnsville. Pastor Tommy James officiated. The family received friends from 2 p.m. until time of service at the church.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 10 Town Square, Burnsville, NC 28714, or the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, 636 Morris Turnpike, Suite 3A, Short Hills, NJ 07078.
