Edna Jones Padgett, 87, of Taylorsville, died Sunday, Jan. 6. She was the daughter of the late Ragan and Minnie Carroll Jones.
Edna was preceded in death by her husbands, David I. Seelbinder and Rae C. Padgett; son, Douglas N. Seelbinder; and siblings Jewell Davis, George Jones and R.B. Jones. Remaining are a son, David Seelbinder, and his wife, Lois, of Newport, Tennessee; daughters, Laura Wahlers and her husband, Dennis, of Taylorsville, and Sarah Seelbinder, of Durham; sister, Wilma J. King, of Littlestown, Pennsylvania; brother, Billy V. Jones, of Spruce Pine; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Edna grew up in Yancey County and attended Micaville High School. After graduation she obtained a degree in nursing, working in North Carolina and Florida, where she lived for 25 years before returning to her beloved mountains. Always active in her local Baptist church, she began teaching young children while in her 20s and taught all ages at some point over the years. As recently as September 2018, Edna was leading an adult co-ed Bible class at First Baptist Church. Besides teaching, she had a deep love for missions and church drama. Her hobbies included gardening, painting, community theatre and writing.
The family received friends from 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at First Baptist Church. A graveside service was 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, at Spruce Pine Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell County.
