Doug Vance, 59, of Spruce Pine, passed away Monday, Feb. 25, 2019. A native of Mitchell County, he was a son of the late Robert “Bob” Vance and Betty Pate Pafford. He was a 1978 graduate of Harris High School and had a long career as a chef at numerous restaurants throughout the United States. Most recently he was an employee of the NC Department of Public Safety as a Food Service Officer with 14 years of service. Doug enjoyed golfing, boating, fishing and cooking. He was very devoted to his mother and stepfather, Betty and Ted Pafford, until their passing.
Surviving is his sister, Lynn Vance Hinshaw, and husband, Larry, of Banner Elk; nephew, Jake Hinshaw, of Boone; several cousins, aunts, uncles and his work family at Avery-Mitchell Correctional Institution.
A gathering of family and friends was 5-7 p.m. Monday, March 4, 2019, at Grassy Creek Golf Course.
