Dorothy Jeane Eskew, 78, of Bakersville, formerly of Hendersonville, died Tuesday, July 17, 2018. She was born on the family property, retired to the home place on the same property and passed away peacefully there. She was a daughter of the late Thomas Ray and Nettie Ruth Gouge Grindstaff. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Randall Eskew; and her brother, Charles Grindstaff.
She owned and operated the Woodfield Inn in Flat Rock for many years before retiring to Bakersville. After retiring, she owned and operated Upper Street Café in Spruce Pine.
She was such an inspiration to her family through love, discipline and compassion. She was the foundation upon which her family was built. She took care of her husband, who passed away two weeks before her. She was the consummate caregiver.
Her survivors include five children, Cathleen Blanchard, of Brevard, Vincent Smith (Tammi), of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, Randall Smith, of Spruce Pine, Lt. Col. Denise Lennon (Tim Lucas), of Melbourne, Florida, and Deborah Smith (Jess), of Rockland, Maine; five grandchildren, Christine Fournier, Ryan Smith, Heather Waldrop, Brittany Townsend and Mack Austin Williams; three great-grandsons, Brody Smith, Cole Fournier and Maverick Townsend; six great-granddaughters, Isabelle Waldrop, Kendall Fournier, Kayden Smith, Olivia Smith, Amelia Smith and Emsley Townsend; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were 11 a.m. Thursday, July 19, 2018, in the Chapel of Moore-Blanchard Funerals & Cremations.
Graveside services are at Snow Hill Cemetery in Bakersville at a later date.
