Doris Gurley Willis Burleson

Doris Gurley Willis Burleson, 84, of the Arbuckle Community, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Dec. 22, 2018, at her home. A native of Yancey County, Doris was a daughter of the late Lewis and Kate Stewart Gurley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Bill Burleson; daughter, Donna Willis Harrison; sister, Louise Burleson; brother, Dan Gurley; son-in-law, Wayne Sams; and brother-in-law, Homer Boone. Doris was a faithful member of Crabtree Baptist Church in Micaville. She was a dedicated prayer warrior and a caregiver to those in need. Doris was an animal lover and enjoyed feeding the wildlife around her home. There are many well-fed birds, squirrels and deer in the Arbuckle Community thanks to Doris. Doris loved her family and adored her church family, all of whom will greatly miss her and her sweet demeanor.

Left to cherish her memories are her son, Terry Lee Willis, and his wife, Linda, of Newdale; daughter, Wanda Sams, of Blue Rock; grandchildren, Jason Dean Willis, of Florida, Jennifer McMahan, and her husband, Kevin, of Spruce Pine, and Alex Rose, and his wife, Megan, of Prices Creek; great-grandchildren, Morgan McMahan, Jade Willis, Mitchell McMahan and Axel Rose; brother, Eugene Gurley, and his wife, Carolyn, of Snow Creek; and sister, Joyce M. Boone, of Spruce Pine.  Several nieces and nephews also survive, including a special niece, Selita Tipton, of Spruce Pine.     

Funeral services were 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2018, at Crabtree Baptist Church in Micaville. Brother Chad Wise and Brother Dale Banks officiated. Burial followed in the Crabtree Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. before services at the church.
