Ray Burleson

Ray Burleson, 63, passed away Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018, at his residence.

Born Feb. 28, 1955, in Mitchell County, he was the son of the late Phillip Burleson. In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Allen and Michael Burleson.

Robert D. Parsons, 92, of Port Charlotte, Florida, left peacefully from his home Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018, to be with the Lord. 

Bob was born in Bakersville to John and Viola Parsons. He grew up in Loafers Glory with his two brothers and three sisters.

Charles Patrick Medley, known as “Pat” to family and friends, passed away Aug. 31, 2018, at the age of 74. 

Patricia Fox Jarrett, “Sis,” 62, of Bakersville, went home to be with the Lord and her loved ones Thursday, Sept. 6, 2018, at her home surrounded by her loving family. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Vernon and Ruth Pate Fox. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Tom Jarrett; son, John Franklin; and brother, Joel Fox. Pat loved cooking, baking cakes and making jelly she often shared with the community.

Arthur C. Hollifield, 86, of Harley Drive, Burnsville, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2018, at his home.

Ray Boone, 83, of Wanna B. Lane, Burnsville, the Arbuckle community, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2018, at the Brian Center Health & Rehab in Spruce Pine.

Born Aug. 29, 1934, in Mitchell County, he was the son of the late Joe and Mae Burleson Boone. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Lawrence Boone; and sister, Gladys Boone Bartlett.

The Rev. Joe Lane Ervin, 88, of 966 Royal Drive, Lincolnton, died Aug. 29, 2018, at his home.

A celebration of life service was 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018, at Boger City United Methodist Church.

Jennifer (Jenny) Ann Ledford was born Oct. 18, 1972, in Johnson City, Tennessee, and was carried into Heaven Aug. 8, 2018, at the age of 45. She passed very unexpectedly at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, Alabama, after a very brief illness.

Paul Everett Buchanan Sr., 91, reunited with his wife Aug. 21, 2018, after a period of declining health. Paul was born in 1926 in Spruce Pine to Audy S. and Mae Duncan Buchanan.

Sharon Duncan Bess, 70, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2018, at Hospice of Cleveland County. Born Nov. 14, 1947, in Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Dennis Duncan and Ruth Grindstaff Duncan. Sharon was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church where she was the Sunday school teacher for 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds as well as a member of the Craft Ladies and Triple L. Sharon was retired from Dr. Joseph R. Hendrick’s Dental Office, a member of the Spruce Pine Chapter No.

Stephan (“Steve”) van der Vorst’s extraordinary life was cut short suddenly Aug. 9, 2018.

Steve was born Nov. 26, 1962, to parents Martinus Cornelis Petrus and Hermina Louisa Gerdina in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The family later moved to the town of Boxtel, where Steve spent his later childhood years before attending the University of Amsterdam. 

Doris Rhyne Thompson, 91, of Spruce Pine, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2018, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine.

Lucille Buchanan Ellis, 93, of Cane Creek Road, Bakersville died Monday, Aug. 13, 2018, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine.

Bobby J. Kennard, 86, of Spruce Pine, went home to be with the Lord July 30, 2018.

Steve Lamar Earwood, 68, passed away Saturday, July 28, 2018, at his home. He was a son of Helen Wiseman and Junior Earwood. Steve was raised in the Oakley neighborhood of Asheville and spent extensive time in Fairview with his extended family. Steve attended Oakley Elementary and graduated from Reynolds High School. Early in his life, he worked alongside his father at Sayles Bleachery before joining the Merchant Marines and working with chemical tankers in Wilmington.
