Clarence Stokes McClellan, 85, of Cabin Road, Spruce Pine, passed away Dec. 7, 2018, at his home. He was a native of Avery County and a son of the late John Stokes and Lizzie Woody McClellan.

David Glenn

David Jeffrey Glenn, 64, of Marion, passed away Sunday, Dec. 9, 2018, at Spartanburg Regional in South Carolina after a two-year battle with cancer. A native of Spruce Pine, he was born July 20, 1954, to the late Claude and Marie Collis Glenn. 

Jeff loved to fish, go boating and play golf. He was an avid Duke basketball fan. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren, with who he spent most of his time. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Betty June Grindstaff, 87, of the Toe Cane community, passed away Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018, at the home of her daughter, Rebecca, and her husband, Kevin. She was the daughter of the late Homer and Bess McKinney Johnson and the wife of the late Joe Grindstaff. She was also preceded in death by an infant son. Betty was a former employee of Roberts Chevrolet and worked many years for Taylor Teague CPA in Spruce Pine.

Joyce Greene, of Walnut Cove, formerly of Bakersville, went home to be with her Savior and Lord Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018, at LifeBrite Community Hospital of Stokes in Danbury.

The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord. Job 1:21. We, as a family, are grieving the loss of our precious Jeffrey Richard Smith, 49, who was born Nov. 4, 1969, in Chicago, Illinois, to his loving parents Richard Dale Smith and Alice Fay Mills Smith. A follower of Jesus, Jeff was called home to his real and forever home Monday, Nov.

Jimmie M. Smith, 88, of Woods Road, Spruce Pine, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018. He was a native of Avery County and the son of the late William E. and Myrtle Garland Smith. He was a Veteran of The United States Air Force and a member of Spruce Pine United Methodist Church. Jim served in The Strategic Air Command throughout the Korean War. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant.

M. Douglas Rowell, a longtime resident of Little Switzerland, passed away at his home Sunday, Oct. 28, 2018, after a short illness, surrounded by family and friends. The family had public services at The Church of the Resurrection at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30. 

Jackie George Hoilman, 79, of McKinney Cove Road, Bakersville, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018. He was a native of Mitchell County and a son of the late Milton and Polly Yelton Hoilman. He was retired as a self-employed roofer and farmer.

Carolyn Proffitt Eller passed away Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2018, at Beacon Place Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro. She was born Oct. 8, 1938, in Baskerville. Carolyn was predeceased by her husband, Keith P. Eller; and her parents, Edward and Winnie Proffitt, of Baskerville. Carolyn is survived by her son, Gregory Eller, of Durham; her daughter, Kathryn Eller Kovach, of Greensboro; and her grandson, Benjamin Kovach, of New York, New York.

James Hugh Stewart, 90, of South Toe River, Burnsville, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018, at his home.

Bruce Howard Sparks was born June 8, 1925, in Bakersville, to Reuben Stokes Sparks and Louise Gouge Sparks. He was their last surviving child. He was a retired United States Navy Master Chief who served his country for 26 years during World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He spent two years of active duty aboard the USS Boise CL-47 in the Pacific. The Boise was a light cruiser that sank several enemy ships, shot down enemy aircraft and bombarded enemy positions to protect U.S. troops.

Jean Whitson, 84, of Marion, passed away at her home on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018, while surrounded by loved ones. The daughter of the late Brack and Maydath Stamey Buchanan, she was born Sept. 21, 1934, in Bakersville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Brown Whitson; and one brother, Billy Buchanan.

Jerry Lee Riddle, 75, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018, at Atrium Health-Cleveland. Born Oct. 1, 1943, in Mitchell County, he was the son of the late Nimpson Riddle and Betty Jane Holifield Riddle.



Seth Daniel McKinney, 15, of Valley Road, Spruce Pine, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2018, at Niswonger Children’s Hospital in Johnson City, Tennessee.
