Earlene Baker, 95, of White Oak Road, Bakersville, went to be with the Lord Saturday evening April 14, 2018. She was born Jan. 9, 1923, in Elk Park, and was the daughter of the late Marvin and Inez Phillips Greene, of Bakersville. Earlene was married to Lee Baker and they had four children.
Roberta Glenn Moore, 81, of Asheville, passed away peacefully Friday, March 30, 2018, at her home due to complications with Sjogren’s syndrome. Born April 16, 1936, in Spruce Pine, she was the oldest daughter of the late Robert and Addie Glenn.
Charles Garrett “Chuck” Crowder, 47, went home to be with his Lord on March 18, 2018, at Care Partners Solace Center of Asheville after suffering a traumatic brain injury. He was the son of Ida Jane Maney Crowder, of Burnsville, and the late Charles Sherrell Crowder. He was also preceded in death by grandparents, Burl and Una Maney, and Charles and Doris Crowder; and an aunt, Murrell Hughes.
Melba Duncan Abernathy, 86, of the Ledger Community, went home to be with the Lord Friday, March 16, 2018, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Earl and Margie Willis Duncan; and the wife of Pat Abernathy. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Peggy Peters; sisters, Mae Willis, Ruby Gouge, Joan Blevins and Sue Wilson; and brothers, Will, Gray, Scott, Phil, Wade and Bobby Dean Duncan.
Elden Monroe Cooke Sr., 85, of Staggerweed Road, Bakersville, went home to be with the Lord March 5, 2018. He was a native of Mitchell County and a son of the late Tulsa and Mae Hopson Cooke. He was a veteran of the United States Navy where he obtained the rank of Chief Petty Officer and retired as an educator with the North Carolina School System in Western North Carolina.
SPRUCE PINE – Lennie McKinney Greer, 92, of Spruce Pine, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018, at her home.
Mrs. Greer was born July 13, 1925, in Mitchell County, to the late Charlie G. McKinney and Ella Navy McKinney. She was the former owner of the Skyline Hotel in Spruce Pine for 30-plus years. She enjoyed tending to her flowers and birds.
NEWLAND – Samuel McDowell Steele Jr., M.D., was born March 16, 1939, to Maxine Meek Steele and Samuel McDowell Steele at their home in Osawatomie, Kansas. He passed away Feb. 2, 2018, at his home in Newland.
Bernice Silver Howell, 97, of Cleve Silver Road, Bakersville, went home to be with the Lord Jan. 30, 2018. A native of Mitchell County, she was a daughter of the late Cleve and Mamie Buchanan Silver. She was retired from Ellen Knitting Company. Bernice was a lifelong member of Silver Chapel Baptist Church where she was a dedicated servant of the church for many years. She loved gardening, and cooking for and taking care of her family and friends.
Doris Perkins Storie, 76, of Storie Road, Boone, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2018, at her home.
Doris was born Nov. 23, 1941, in Mitchell County, a daughter of the late George and Zeola Hughes Perkins. She was an owner and operator of Bamboo Landscaping and a member of Deerfield United Methodist Church.
