NEWLAND -- Orpha Lee Staton Burleson, 90, of Newland, died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017, at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville.

She was the daughter of the late Mack and Donna Buchanan Staton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Stewart Staton, and her sister, Archie Mae Staton James. 

Born Jan. 28, 1926, she was a lifelong resident of Avery County and was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- Grover Ray Garland, 92, of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017. He was a native of Mitchell County and son of the late Jesse and Naomi Masters Garland. He was a member of North Johnson City Baptist Church and was retired as owner of Garland Lumber Company and was also a former employee of Mason Dixon Freight Company in Kingsport, Tennessee.

UNICOI, TENN. Don Hobson, 74, of 5729 Unicoi Drive, Unicoi, Tennessee, passed away Friday, Jan. 6, 2017, at his home. He was a native of Mitchell County. Mr. Hobson was a son of the late John and Helen Burleson Hobson. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and had served during Vietnam. He was awarded the Good Conduct Metal, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. 

GREEN MOUNTAIN -- Elouise Peterson Renfro, 83 of Brummitts Creek Road, Green Mountain, went home to be with the Lord, Jan. 14, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.

She was a native of Mitchell County and a daughter of the late Maynard and Darliskey Peterson. She was a homemaker and attended Brummitts Creek Freewill Baptist Church. She was well known throughout the county for making storybook dolls, quilts and many other crafts. She had a special God-given talent.

SPRUCE PINE -- Beatrice Ann Buchanan Wise, 94, of Biggerstaff Road, Spruce Pine, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, at Autumn Care of Marion.

Born on Feb. 1, 1922, in Avery County, she was the daughter of the late Robert G. and Harriett Matilda Buchanan. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Sam Wise, who passed away in 1999. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Viola Woody and Celie Wilcox; and her brothers, Addie, Jesse, Ernie and Sammy Buchanan.

SPRUCE PINE -- Judy Carol Buchanan, 69, of Fairview Lane, Spruce Pine, passed away Monday, Jan. 2, 2017, at her home.

Born March 18, 1947, in Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Jerry and Elma Sparks Duncan. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brothers, Bill, Jack, Ted, Jim and Donald Duncan; and her sisters, Anna Lee Pitman and Phyllis Grindstaff.

BAKERSVILLE -- Peggy Campbell Cox, 74, went home to be with the Lord Jan. 4, 2017. She was a daughter of the late Nave and Daisy Mosley Campbell and a native of Mitchell County. 

She was previously employed in restaurant work as well as a Hospice Caregiver. She was a member of Buladean Presbyterian Church. 

SPRUCE PINE -- Eunice Robinson Riddle, 89, passed away Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017, at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation in Spruce Pine. Born Dec. 21, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Hubert Robinson, who died in 1951, and the late Alieen Chrisawn Robinson, who died in 1996. Mrs. Riddle was born in Micaville. Mrs. Riddle was also preceded in death by her husband, Joe William Riddle, who died Feb. 9, 2006. Also, Mrs. Riddle lost two brothers and one sister, who all died in childhood.

Sybil M. (Johnson) Flannery, 92, died Dec. 6, 2016, at Theda Care Medical Center in Appleton, Wisconsin. Sybil was born Sept. 11, 1924, in Iredell County, North Carolina, to Henry and Beulah (Carter) Johnson. Sybil attended nursing school in Statesville and worked in the OB/delivery section of the same hospital. Sybil married Vern Flannery in April of 1945 shortly before the end of World War II. He was in the Army Air Corps and they wanted to get married before he was shipped overseas. His deployment was canceled because the war ended in June.

SWANNANOA - O’Barron Delaney Calhoun, 106 plus 10 months and four days, of Swannanoa, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2016. 

A funeral service honoring his life on what would have been his 107th birthday will be Thursday, Jan. 5, at the Spruce Pine United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeremy Troxler officiating. 

SPRUCE PINE -- Keith Ray “Smiley” Woody, 62, of Dale Road, Spruce Pine, traveled to his heavenly home Thursday, Dec. 15, 2016.

A native of Mitchell County, he was the son of the late Frank and Ruth Anna Brown Woody. Keith was a member of the Grassy Creek Baptist Church. Keith was a graduate of the Class of 1972 from Harris High School, where he drove a school bus and gained the nickname “Smiley.” 

SPRUCE PINE -- Michael Marion Collins, 37, of Spruce Pine, passed away Friday, Dec. 9, 2016. He was born Oct. 28, 1979, to his loving mother and father, the late Kathy King Collins and Michael William Collins. He was also preceded in death by grandparents, Ernest Warren King and Daphne King Forbis, and William and Helen Collins. He was a loving father, son, nephew, cousin and friend. He had an unconditional loving heart and giving spirit, never met a stranger and always had a smile to share with everyone. His love of music, especially playing the guitar, continued throughout his life.

SPRUCE PINE -- Jessie Love Canipe, 88, of 437 Humpback Mountain Road, Spruce Pine, died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016, at the Mitchell House in Spruce Pine. 

A native of Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Robert “Bud” and Effie Ward Love.  In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Carroll E. Canipe; and by her sister, Mary Lee Miller. 

LINVILLE FALLS -- Bobbie Lee Dennie, 83, of Linville Falls, passed away Dec. 9, 2016, at his residence.

A native of Avery County, he was born Dec. 31, 1932, a son of the late Roy Garvel and Emily Dellinger Dennie.

Bobbie went to Clemson College. He worked at American Thread before moving to Charlotte and becoming a supervisor at Barnhardt Manufacturing Company, where he worked for 36 years and in those years missed only one day of work.

He was a member of Pisgah United Methodist Church and enjoyed traveling, gardening and being with his grandchildren.

Dr. Howard Wilson McCall was born March 10, 1919, in Spruce Pine and died Dec. 7, 2016, in South Carolina. Howard was the second of two sons born to Robert Schell McCall and Annie Wilson McCall, who for their working lifetimes owned McCall’s Department Store in Spruce Pine and then passed it to R. Schell Jr. 

As a young man, Howard enjoyed fishing and was an excellent athlete at Harris High School in Spruce Pine. He attended Mars Hill College and went on to complete his college education at the University of North Carolina.
